Sigiriya day tripColombo to SigiriyaLion Rock Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Lion Rock is one of the most extraordinary ancient monuments in Asia — a palace complex built atop an 180-metre volcanic rock in the 5th century AD. Here's how to do a day trip from Colombo, what to expect on the climb, and how to combine it with Dambulla Cave Temple.

Prices may vary. Due to recent increases in petrol and diesel prices, some fares mentioned in this article may no longer be current. Please contact us via WhatsApp for the most up-to-date rates.

Built in 477 AD by King Kasyapa I as a royal fortress and palace, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most visited attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The flat-topped rock rises 180 metres above the surrounding jungle, its sides adorned with 5th-century frescoes of the famous cloud maidens. At the summit: the ruins of the royal palace with sweeping views across the jungle plain. Combined with Dambulla, a Colombo day trip gives you two of Sri Lanka's greatest ancient sites in a single day.

Getting from Colombo to Sigiriya

We recommend departing Colombo by 5:30–6:00am to beat morning city traffic. This gets you to Dambulla Cave Temple just as it opens at 7am. After Dambulla (1–1.5 hours), the 20-minute drive to Sigiriya brings you there by 10am — ideal before midday heat and tour buses.

Combining Sigiriya with Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla Royal Cave Temple is 20 km before Sigiriya on the A9 road and is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex. Five caves are hollowed into a granite outcrop at 160m elevation, containing 153 statues of the Buddha and over 2,100 square metres of murals painted between the 1st century BC and 18th century AD. Entrance: $12 USD. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Optimal order: Visit Dambulla first (opens 7am, cooler morning), then drive to Sigiriya. You'll reach Sigiriya by 10am — before the heat and before the main tour groups — giving you the water gardens and lower staircase almost to yourself.

What to Expect at Sigiriya

The Water Gardens

Before climbing, walk through the magnificent 5th-century water gardens — symmetrical pools, fountains, and moats that still function during the rainy season. These are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Allow 20–30 minutes.

The Frescoes Gallery

Halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery houses 22 remaining Sigiriya Damsels — exquisite frescoes of bejewelled celestial maidens painted in the 5th century. Above the gallery, the famous Lion Platform marks the entrance to the final staircase via the giant lion paws.

The Summit — Royal Palace Ruins

At the top: foundations of the royal palace, a throne, cisterns, and gardens at 349 metres above sea level. Views across the jungle plain are extraordinary on a clear day. Spend 20–30 minutes at the summit before the descent.

Practical Climbing Tips

  • Start the climb before 9am — the exposed rock heats up quickly after 10am
  • Wear closed sneakers or hiking sandals — flip-flops are dangerous on steep steps
  • Bring at least 1 litre of water per person; there is no water available on the rock itself
  • Wasps nest near the frescoes gallery — move slowly and calmly in that section
  • The summit is fully exposed to wind — bring a hat and apply sunscreen before starting
  • If you have a severe fear of heights, the Lion Platform (about 80% of the way up) is a good endpoint

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How far is Sigiriya from Colombo?

Sigiriya is approximately 165 km from Colombo city centre. Via the A1/A6 highways through Kurunegala, the journey takes 3.5–4.5 hours depending on traffic. Departing Colombo by 5:30–6am gets you to Sigiriya by 10am, before the main midday heat and crowds.

Q.How much does a Sigiriya day trip from Colombo cost?

A private car day trip from Colombo to Sigiriya and back (including Dambulla Cave Temple) costs $100–$120 USD with Colombo Cabs. This covers up to 12 hours with the driver, all transport, fuel, and tolls. Sigiriya entrance: $30 USD; Dambulla: $12 USD — paid separately at the gate.

Q.Is the Sigiriya climb difficult?

The Sigiriya climb involves approximately 1,200 steps over 1.5–2 hours (up and down). The path includes ladders, steep stairways, and narrow ledges. It is manageable for most adults of average fitness but not suitable for those with a severe fear of heights or limited mobility. Wear closed shoes and start early.

Q.What is the best time to climb Sigiriya?

The best time to climb Sigiriya is between 7am and 9am, before the heat builds and before tour groups arrive. Sunset climbs (the site closes at 5:30pm) are also beautiful but less common. Avoid midday climbs — the exposed rock surface absorbs heat and the ascent becomes very uncomfortable.

Q.Can you see Sigiriya in a day from Colombo?

Yes. Departing Colombo at 5:30–6am, you can visit Dambulla Cave Temple by 10am (1–1.5 hours) and Sigiriya by noon (2 hours for the climb). Depart Sigiriya by 3pm and arrive back in Colombo by 7–7:30pm. It's a long day but very rewarding.
