Built in 477 AD by King Kasyapa I as a royal fortress and palace, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most visited attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The flat-topped rock rises 180 metres above the surrounding jungle, its sides adorned with 5th-century frescoes of the famous cloud maidens. At the summit: the ruins of the royal palace with sweeping views across the jungle plain. Combined with Dambulla, a Colombo day trip gives you two of Sri Lanka's greatest ancient sites in a single day.
Getting from Colombo to Sigiriya
| Route | Distance | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via A1 + A6 (Kurunegala) | 165 km | 3.5–4.5 hr | Main route, reliable road |
| Via Kandy + Matale | 185 km | 4–5 hr | Scenic alternative, longer |
| Via Expressway to Kurunegala | 155 km | 3–4 hr | Fastest option |
We recommend departing Colombo by 5:30–6:00am to beat morning city traffic. This gets you to Dambulla Cave Temple just as it opens at 7am. After Dambulla (1–1.5 hours), the 20-minute drive to Sigiriya brings you there by 10am — ideal before midday heat and tour buses.
Combining Sigiriya with Dambulla Cave Temple
Dambulla Royal Cave Temple is 20 km before Sigiriya on the A9 road and is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex. Five caves are hollowed into a granite outcrop at 160m elevation, containing 153 statues of the Buddha and over 2,100 square metres of murals painted between the 1st century BC and 18th century AD. Entrance: $12 USD. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
What to Expect at Sigiriya
The Water Gardens
Before climbing, walk through the magnificent 5th-century water gardens — symmetrical pools, fountains, and moats that still function during the rainy season. These are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Allow 20–30 minutes.
The Frescoes Gallery
Halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery houses 22 remaining Sigiriya Damsels — exquisite frescoes of bejewelled celestial maidens painted in the 5th century. Above the gallery, the famous Lion Platform marks the entrance to the final staircase via the giant lion paws.
The Summit — Royal Palace Ruins
At the top: foundations of the royal palace, a throne, cisterns, and gardens at 349 metres above sea level. Views across the jungle plain are extraordinary on a clear day. Spend 20–30 minutes at the summit before the descent.

Practical Climbing Tips
- Start the climb before 9am — the exposed rock heats up quickly after 10am
- Wear closed sneakers or hiking sandals — flip-flops are dangerous on steep steps
- Bring at least 1 litre of water per person; there is no water available on the rock itself
- Wasps nest near the frescoes gallery — move slowly and calmly in that section
- The summit is fully exposed to wind — bring a hat and apply sunscreen before starting
- If you have a severe fear of heights, the Lion Platform (about 80% of the way up) is a good endpoint
