Built by the Portuguese in 1588 and fortified by the Dutch in 1663, Galle Fort is one of the best-preserved colonial sea fortresses in Asia. It covers 36 hectares of the Galle peninsula, its massive coral-and-granite walls still intact after 400 years. Inside: Dutch colonial streets lined with boutique hotels, art galleries, organic cafes, and gem shops, all home to a lively residential community unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
Colombo to Galle: Which Route to Take?
| Route | Distance | Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Expressway (E01) | 120 km | 1.75–2.5 hr | Fast arrival, most efficient |
| Old Galle Road (coastal) | 135 km | 2.5–3.5 hr | Scenic stops, beaches en route |
| Via Ratnapura (interior) | 160 km | 3.5–4 hr | Scenic hill country alternative |
For a day trip, we recommend taking the expressway down in the morning to maximize time in Galle, then returning via the coastal road — stopping at Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, and Bentota on the way back. Best of both routes.
Stops Along the Coastal Road (Old Galle Road)
- Mount Lavinia (12 km): Colombo's closest beach resort — good for breakfast by the ocean
- Kalutara (43 km): Gangatilaka Vihara temple on the Kalu River with a striking white stupa
- Bentota (65 km): water sports, Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga Estate, Bentota Beach
- Ambalangoda (80 km): famous for traditional Sinhala mask carving and Kolam dance performance art
- Hikkaduwa (99 km): coral reef snorkelling, sea turtles, and a lively beach strip
- Galle Fort (120 km): the destination
What to See Inside Galle Fort
The Rampart Walk
Walk the 1.3 km perimeter of the fort walls — the best views are from Flag Rock and the Galle Lighthouse. At dusk, locals gather on the western ramparts to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Free, takes 45–60 minutes at a leisurely pace.
Church Street and the Dutch Reformed Church
The 1755 Dutch Reformed Church is the oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka. Church Street is lined with colonial-era buildings repurposed as boutique guesthouses, jewellery shops, and galleries.
The National Maritime Museum
Inside the 17th-century Dutch warehouse, this museum houses colonial-era seafaring instruments, antique maps, and artefacts from local shipwrecks. Entry: approximately $2 USD. Worth 45 minutes.
